Five Reasons Why Chartres is Worth Visiting

Paris has the most visited monuments, but there are picturesque places you can see in nearby cities.  Scenic Chartres is worth a day trip from Paris. If you are into historical, gothic structures and stained glass art, this is one trip you shouldn’t miss. It is in the Centre-Val-De Loire region. There are five reasons why Chartres is worth visiting.

Although it was an hour drive away from Paris, it was a nice weekend to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. An hour and fifteen minutes train ride via TER from Montparnasse station is an alternative to driving. It costs around 18,40 euros to get to Chartres.

These are my five reasons why Chartres is worth visiting:

1. Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres (Cathédrale Notre Dame de Chartres)

Visiting the Cathedral was the top priority for this trip. Not only because it is a World Heritage Site, but also as a masterpiece for Gothic Art. We allotted enough time to marvel at the magnificent architecture and brilliant stained glass windows. It was a sight to behold with its 12th-century windows, the 18th-century altar, and the intricate 16th-18th century sculptures on the choir screens. It’s surreal how the designs were so intricate.

2. A Charming City Near Paris

Although this visit was on a gloomy day, I think a little bit of sun wouldn’t hurt. I found this city to be pedestrian-friendly. It’s got wide footpaths on major streets, separating vehicular from foot traffic. It does have its share of narrow streets, but it was easy to navigate. I try to avoid crowded places regularly; how much more during the pandemic? I felt everyone observed proper social distancing and minimum health protocols like wearing a mask when outdoors. I was less anxious and more relaxed. Also, the bursting colours of flowering plants add to this city’s charm.

3. Impressive Street and Mosaic Art Works

One of the reasons why I prefer a walking tour in and around city centres is the surprise a random structure or street art can pique my interest. The detail in the mural art below is impressive. Be on the lookout for vibrant street art! They might surprise you. There is an outstanding mosaic display at the La Maison Picassiette. It will be interesting to see when restrictions are lifted.

4. Get the Feel of a Medieval or Historical town

Walk along the river banks of Eure, and you’ll see the old Chartres with cobblestone paths, old houses, and ancient walls.

5. Food Tour

My favourite part, of course, is trying out local food. Chartres is quaint, and there are plenty of cafés and restaurants just across the Cathedral to choose from. It was just lovely to sit, relax, and enjoy a meal or café gourmand after a long walk.

Going to the local markets (Marchés) is an excellent way to discover towns and cities. Check the local market days and opening hours as they are not open every day.
